Josh and Gemma Make a Baby by Sarah Ready

I am a big Sarah Ready fan (check out my review of the first book in her Soulmates in Romeo series!) and was so excited to read her new book.  Below are my honest thoughts.

Focused around the topic of fertility, children, and the struggles of IVF, this romance is so cute!  Josh and Gemma fit so well together - though it takes them a while to see it.  This is a second chance romance, with some subtle misunderstandings and a very oblivious main character (though we love her anyway).  


Gemma has been divorced and is done with men, but she really wants a baby.  In fact, she lists it as her New Year's Resolution and sets out to recruit Josh Lewenthal - her brother's childhood best friend - to be the sperm donor.  Surprisingly, Josh agrees.  Despite Gemma's plans for a no-commitment exchange, these two reconnect as they go through starting the process of IVF.  Maybe there's a little more there than Gemma expected... in fact, they might fulfill more than one resolution this year.

Sarah Ready has a good example of character development throughout the story, as we learn more about Gemma as she learns about herself.  I also enjoyed her friendship with the ladies of the fertility group - asking for a friend (it's me, I'm wondering), can we get Carly’s backstory next??
I do wish we had gotten to see Josh’s perspective in this story - he has some included sketches that serve to illustrate what moments are important to him, which is a detail I love in this book - but I would have loved to have a look into his brain during some of the chapters. 

Overall this book is too cute to resist and I definitely recommend it as your next romance read!

Gemma knows him. He’s nice (enough), he’s funny (-ish), he’s healthy (she thinks) and he didn’t burn any ants with a magnifying glass as a kid. Which, in Gemma’s mind, makes him the perfect option for a sperm donor.


So Gemma wants to make a deal. An unemotional, business-like arrangement. No commitments, just a baby.


To Gemma’s surprise, Josh agrees.


They have nothing in common, except their agreement to make a baby and their desire to keep things businesslike.


But the thing about baby-making…it’s hard to keep it businesslike, it’s nearly impossible to keep it unemotional, and it’s definitely impossible to keep your heart out of the mix. Because when you’re making a baby together, things have a way of starting to feel like you’re making other things too – like a life, and a family, and love. And when the baby-making ends, you wish that everything else didn’t have to end too.

 Thank you to Social Butterfly PR and Erin Hawkins for sending me an e-ARC of this book to read and review!  As always, this review is my honest opinion and can be found on my Goodreads profile as well as this blog. This story is great and the chemistry between Barrett and Chloe is a delight!  Enemies-to-lovers and fake dating are always a great combination of tropes and Erin Hawkins writes them very well. Even when we as readers have an inkling or two of how this is going to turn out in the end (it is a romance, after all), it feels fresh and exciting as we get to know the characters, their motivations, and the personalities that make them click so well.   I am a big character-driven reader and I really enjoyed reading both Chloe and Barrett's perspectives.  These character have dimensions that lend more  to  the story than just the romance, while also being delightfully attracted to each other and keeping the romance part of the book  adequately  spiced. Bravely by Maggie Stiefvater

Disney, bold & brave, magical 5 stars As a huge fan of Maggie Stiefvater’s, I was to excited to receive an ARC of Bravely from Disney Books on NetGalley. After reading it I can confidently say I cannot imagine another author who would have done justice to the continuation of Merida’s story.   “Red hair, keen eyes, quick brain, built to start fires but not to put them out.” - Prologue, p. xiii Stiefvater writes in such a way that magic is an intrinsic part of every story, even when it is not fully present.  The imagery is vivid, the emotions are strong, the plot is easy to follow yet hard to predict. As Merida makes a bet with gods of old and takes on the challenge of changing her family before destruction comes for DunBroch, readers get sucked into a story about family and nature, growth and magic.  This story is also an amazing continuation of the Disney/Pixar film Brave.
