Let's give thanks for books

Image
Hello everyone!!  Today in America, it's Thanksgiving!  And something I'm thankful for is books!!  So many wonderful, amazing books.  I'm also thankful to all my blog readers, because without you I would be a lonely blogger writing posts about books I've read and no one would be reading them.  So thank you all.  Have a wonderful day, and eat lots of turkey! P.S.  If anyone is interested in reading the Velesi Trilogy (The Binding, The Drifting, and The Whispering), Amazon is having a Black Friday sale, and the first book is FREE!  The link to the author's page is below for more details. http://lfilloon.blogspot.com/2013/11/black-friday-sale.html

This Week on Bookwormin'...

Hello!  First, I wanted to share a fun fact. Fun fact!  Did you know that in the month of October, I got the most page views in one month that I have ever had before?  October sets the record with 380 views!  Thanks so much readers, that is so awesome! Secondly, as you all know, The House of Hades came out October 8th.  After I read it, and re-read it, and then re-re-read it, I started the entire Percy Jackson series over again.  I've already posted about the PJ series, but in case you didn't read it, here is the magical links that will take you there: Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Books 1,2, and 3 Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Book 4 Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Book 5 Also, I've been re-reading the Artemis Fowl series!  I know, why read so many books all over again.  Well it's been like 2 years and they were books I thoroughly enjoyed.  Here's the old links to those: Artemis Fowl: Books 1-7 There is also one more book, Artemis Fowl: The Last G

The House of Hades by Rick Riordan

Leo, Hazel, Jason, Piper, Frank, and Nico are sailing the Argo II, trying to reach the Doors of Death in Epirus, Greece.  Meanwhile, Percy and Annabeth are struggling through Tartarus, trying to get to the Doors of Death on their side. The crew on the Argo II have many challenges to face, new enemies and old.  Hazel runs into the goddess Hecate, but Hecate might be fighting for Gaea.  Nico and Jason face Cupid, leaving one of Nico's biggest secrets in the open.  Frank takes a step in the direction of his father, changing him for the better or worse.  Leo, Jason, and Piper face an old enemy, which leads to Leo facing a harder challenge than he ever imagined. Camp Jupiter is ready for war against Camp Half-Blood, and the seven can't do anything to stop it without sending someone back to the camp.  Old friends make an appearance, including Rachel Elizabeth Dare and the love-able Grover Underwood.  Octavian and Reyna also are back, and Octavian is an annoying as ever. Schedule Change

OOPS!!  I'm going out of town this weekend and won't have wi-fi, so there goes my Saturday update!  I swear, every time I decide on a day to update, I'm suddenly unable to update for three straight weeks!!  Sorry guys.  But I'll be back on Monday, so I will get it up then.  Have a great weekend everyone!

Fan-girling like Crazy

Image
First, I'd like to thank everyone who voted and commented.  In case you were interested, To Kill a Mockingbird won, so I'll be reading that book once I get it from the library. Second, I'd like to apologize for not blogging the last two Saturdays.  I had dance things.  Sorry!  But I will for sure blog this Saturday. Third, just so it's clear to everyone I'm going to define the title.  More specifically, fangirling. To fangirl is to adore something.  I fan-girl over books, chocolate, and One Direction.  Lots of people fangirl over Nutella.  But fan-girling is more than just liking something.  You also have to mention it at least once in daily conversation. Ex: "Oh my gosh, we were working on our project and all I could think about was Nutella.  I love it so much!  I NEED Nutella or I think I'll die." In fan-girling, you also get "the feels" about whatever it is you fangirl over. Ex: "You got me a whole jar of Nutella

I'm Back Baby, and Better than Ever!

Hello!!  Sorry I've been gone so long!  Now, I know I say this every time I haven't blogged for a while, but I've decided to update every Saturday.  It's not a school day and I won't have to worry about finishing my work, and I'll have finished at least 2 books at the end of each week.  So from now on, every Saturday I'll post a new book summary.  (I've decided that's what I do.  I don't review, I summarize.) Also, if you can take a moment to look to the left of your screen.... you should notice I have a poll up there.  On that poll is a list of books!  These are the books that I need to read, but I can't choose which to start with.  So... TAKE A VOTE!  What book have you read?  Which one has a better title?  Did your read all of them?  Great!  Tell me which one you enjoyed the most, which one you think I should read, which witch is which?  Vote for what book you want me to read first.  I'll give you until the first of October, when the

Vampires?  Been there.  Werewolves?  Done that.  Mermaids?  Welcome to Lies Beneath. Calder White is a merman.  He lives in Lake Superior with his sisters during the summer, but during the winter he tries to get as far away from them as he can.  When his oldest sister lets him know that John Hancock has been found though, Calder is ready to return to the lake in order to help his sisters get their revenge.  When Hancock finally arrives with his family in tow, Calder is chosen to be bait for Hancock's daughters.  The plan is for Calder to bring the youngest girl, Sophie, into the woods and lead her to his sisters.  Then one of his sisters would take her further into the woods and put her to sleep.  Calder would then bring Sophie home once everyone was sufficiently worried, therefore making Calder a person Hancock can trust.  Unfortunately for Calder, his eldest sister causes the plan to go awry and Lily Hancock becomes the new target for Calder.  But as Lily slowly starts to t

My Invisible Boyfriend by Susie Day

4 stars!  This is a great book, with a main character who has a passion for detectives, especially Mycroft Christie, a debonair twenty-third century time traveling detective, with whom she has some illuminating, yet imaginary conversations.  Heidi's problems started at the end of summer, when all her friends returned from enjoying their breaks somewhere exciting.  The Leftover Squad has changed.   Wild Ludo is, well, still wild, more more fashion conscious and less herself.  Dai, a.k.a Big Dai, isn't so big anymore, thinks their old dedication to Mycroft Christie was "dorky", and has some serious muscles.  Fili is more emo but less in a way, and was she flirting with the new goth kid?  Heidi feels left out and so when Ludo think Heidi has a secret boyfriend, Heidi goes with it.       Giving "Ed" a name, a ULife profile, and some (okay, maybe a lot) of Mycroft Christie's traits, making him the perfect boyfriend.  Maybe too perfect?  Her boss, Betsy

This is a really good book!  Some parts seemed kind of creepy, but definitely in a good way. Twelve year old Clara Wintermute begs her father to allow her to let Professor Gaspare Grisini and his two assistants perform with their fantoccini (puppets) at her birthday party.  The day after her party, Clara goes missing.  Grisini's assistants, two orphan children named, Lizzie Rose, who is thirteen, and Parsefall, are questioned by the police because Grisini is suspected of kidnapping.  After being questioned, they discover a new puppet in the trunk that looks just like Clara!  Meanwhile Grisini seems to have disappeared as well.  Parsefall wishes to continue doing puppet shows without Grisini and does so on his own, using the Clara look-alike puppet.  When Clara's father Dr. Wintermute sees the puppet, Parsefall gets in trouble with the police and Lizzie Rose must find them somewhere else to stay.  A letter from one of Grisini's acquaintances, Cassandra, come in the post, in

Amber Appleton is the Princess of Hope.  She lives with her mom and her dog Bobby Big Boy in the back of the school bus her mom drives.  Her mom won't eat anything.  Her dad left.  But Amber still has hope.  And The Five.  Ty, Ricky, Jared, Chad and Amber herself.      In fifth grade, Jared and Amber didn't move up to sixth grade.  Jared had a bad stutter and Amber missed too much school.  They were put in a class with Ty, the only colored kid in school, Ricky, who has autism, and Chad, whose body didn't grow so he was in a wheelchair.  They had a "club" twice a week where they played board games.  Jared lost his stutter, but the club didn't help with much aside from that.  Well, that and forming The Five.      When they moved up to high school, one of the teachers, Mr. Franks, let them use his downstairs-no windows classroom.  The boys played Halo 3 on the X-box while Amber wrote advertisements for the marketing club.  The Five were always there before

The Unidentified by Rae Mariz

"Everyone knows we are being watched.  It's not even something to be paranoid about.  It's a fact.  What I mean is, everybody acts like they're on TV.  Like we're stars in our own private dramas.  We'll be talking to a friend and then all of the sudden we're aware of... I don't know, being public.  We start to say our lines too loud, waiting for the audience to laugh.  Not for our friend to laugh, just... the world.  The world is watching somehow.  And we want to entertain them."  -Mariz, Rae.  The Unidentified, p. 1-2.       Great book!  I picked it off the shelf thinking it would be kind of like the Hunger Games.  I suppose it was kind of, with the evil mastermind and the "Careers", but mostly it was The Unidentified.       Katey, more commonly known as Kid, goes to school in an old shopping mall.  Her school is known as the Game, and everything about the Game is advertising and brand names and technology.  Until an unknown grou

The Thirteen Treasures by Michelle Harrison

The Thirteen Treasures:  Thirteen year old Tanya is being punished.  Tanya can see fairies, and she writes about them in her journal, even though she's not supposed to write or talk about the fairies to anyone.  So at night the fairies punish her for disobeying.  When her mom comes in one night after the fairies levitated Tayna up to the ceiling, she finds the chandelier ripped down and decides she needs a break from the craziness.  She sends Tayna to her grandmother's house, Elvesden Manor, which is residence to many fairies, although most of them leave Tanya alone.  While there Tanya receives a magic compass that always points towards her house, a charm bracelet with thirteen charms, and a warning to stay out of the forest.  Tanya and her friend Fabian see a mysterious girl in the woods though, and head in anyway.  With some help they discover the girl is Morwenna Bloom and she disappeared years ago, and Fabian's uncle Amos was blamed for her disappearance.  Then Tanya fi

Pile of Books

Image
Hi everyone!  Up until now, I've just been reading books like crazy.  Now though, it's time to go though the pile of books I've read and sort them so I know which ones to blog about.  I would just write about all of them right now but...   Well with a pile of books this big, I decided to sort it into sections.  A couple books I've already blogged about (like the Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Lemonade Mouth Puckers Up).  Some I've told you I was going to blog about (The Thirteen Treasures Trilogy, I haven't forgotten, those are next!).  And others are on my list!  I'm trying to be on top of things this year and although it hasn't been working too well I'm still trying to blog once a week, so I should get through most (if not all) of the books shown.  Thanks! ~laila

Lemonade Mouth Puckers Up by Mark Peter Hughes

(Aaahh, I'm so behind on my blogging!) The story of Lemonade Mouth continues!!  I was really, really happy when I saw that there was a sequel book to Lemonade Mouth.  Lemonade Mouth Puckers Up by Mark Peter Hughes is the continuing story of Lemonade Mouth.  Now, Lemonade Mouth is on summer vacation and although the band had some plans, they took backstage to performing.  After a special performance, Lemonade Mouth is approached by a scout for a famous record company and is told to call.  Once Stella calls and schedules an appointment, Lemonade Mouth is on their way to the big leagues.  The band tells the story of how they got a record deal with a big time name, how they went onto a popular TV show and made a difference, and how they weren't afraid to stand up for what they believe, even if it means losing something big.  Mo's old friend from India, Rajeev, comes and visits and Mo is afraid her parents are trying to arrange a marriage between the two, even though they are

My Readings (Some of Them Anyway)

Lately I went back to the library and did the usual return-pick up thing.   So, first step: Return old books .   Second step: Check out new books.   Third step: Read new books.  Check, check, and check.  Now I'm on the fourth step.   Fourth step: Blog about books.   Now, I'm not gonna blog about every single book I got, but I'll try to do most of them.  In the meantime, this post is so you know what I'm reading and am to lazy to actually have in a separate post. Recently, I just finished two books: The Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, and the sequel  Days of Blood and Starlight.   These books are about a war between chimera and seraphim.  The chimera see the seraphim as monsters and the seraphim return the favor.  Now this isn't like and angels and devils sort of thing, there's no heaven and hell.  The main character is Karou, a human girl who works for a chimera named Brimstone.  Brimstone trades people wishes for teeth.  Big wishes, little wishe

13 Gifts by Wendy Mass

13 Gifts is the third book in the "Birthday" series.  The first sentence in this book was one of my favorite parts, and it lured me in. "Like all big mistakes, mine started with a goat." -13 Gifts From then on, I was sold and loved this book from start to finish.  In this story, Tara is sent to live with her aunt and Uncle in the town of Willow Falls.  When she gets there her cousin introduces her to some friends, and they become a group.  Rory who is constantly losing her phone, Leo and Amanda who for some reason don't talk out loud to each other and instead communicate with chalkboards tied around their necks, and David who is called Bee Boy by Amanda.  When Tara runs into an antique dealer named Angelina D'Angelo, she must collect certain items before her thirteenth birthday or Tara's secret will be revealed.  At first, Tara tries to collect the items by herself, but soon her friends find out what she's doing, although not why she doing it.  Dav

Finally by Wendy Mass

This is the second book in the "Birthdays" series by Wendy Mass.  Or maybe it's less of a series and more a bunch of spin-off books??  I'll call it a series for now. The first book is 11 Birthdays.  Now we have Finally, which is about a girl who is finally turning twelve.  All her life, Rory has been told by her parents "you can do this when you're twelve" or "you can get that when you're twelve".  When you're twelve, when you're twelve. Now the time has come, and Rory is turning twelve.  And she has a long list of stuff to check off.  Get a pet.  Shave her legs.  Get a cell phone.  Replace her glasses with contacts.  Pierce her ears.  Etc., etc.  The timing is perfect, because a movie is being filmed at Rory's school and the director is looking for students to be extras.  When Rory is chosen to be in the film, she and her friend decide to cross off one thing on her list.  Shaving her legs.  While shopping, they buy all sorts
