Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Books 4

The Battle of the Labyrinth is the fourth book in the Percy Jackson series and it is a very exciting book.  Percy, Grover, Annabeth and Tyson venture into the lair of the Minotuar searching for the creator of the Labyrinth, Daedalus.  During the search they run into monsters, goddesses and tricky decisions.  Percy battles one of his relatives, and the four friends have an unpleasant run-in with an old enemy named Luke.  Though there is many trials in the Labyrinth, the hardest one is navigating.  Unfortunately, Luke is after a way to navigate the maze too.  To top it all off, Nico DiAngelo, son of Hades, is summoning the dead and listening to the spirit of an old ghost out for revenge.  Percy and his friends must find Nico and help him, navigate the maze to find an old inventor who should have died hundreds of years ago, oh, and did I mention Grover is searching for a lost god called Pan?  Somewhere along the way the questers split up, which according to Annabeth is a really bad idea a

Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan is one of my favorite series!!  Based on Greek mythology, these books are about a boy who is half mortal, half Greek god.  In the first book, The Lightning Thief, Percy Jackson finds out the truth about his father after being taken to Camp Half-Blood, a safe place for demigods like him.  At the camp, he discovers that his Latin teacher, Mr. Brunner, is the centaur Chiron from the Greek stories he learned about.  The camp director is Dionysus, the god of wine, and his best friend Grover has hooves!!  After having his world turned upside down in addition to his mom disappearing in a golden shower of sparks, Percy is given a quest with Grover and a very experienced camper named Annabeth to retrieve Zeus' master bolt, which Percy supposedly stole.  So he gets a prophecy from a dead skeleton called the Oracle of Apollo, and heads out west towards Las Vegas.  Along the way he and his friends encounter lots of monsters, including Medusa.  An

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Image
Hi again!  I want to thank my aunt Hannah for giving my mom this book for me, because it's a really good story.  It's intriguing and I love how it takes place in Minnesota, focusing on our favorite part of the year, the Minnesota winter!!  :) *Note: Below is a review that I had written for my post for the author, Maggie Stiefvater.  The old post for this book has been deleted.  (1/16/16)* In Shiver, the first book of the Shiver Trilogy, Grace has spent years watching the wolves in the woods behind her house, and feels a special connection to one yellow-eyed wolf.  She calls him her wolf, though she doesn't know why.  Every winter, the wolves appear, and come summer they vanish again.  Grace waits for her wolf, trying to touch him, to figure out why he feels so familiar to her.  Until one day, she does touch him.  And nothing will ever be the same.  For either of them. Sam watches Grace from the woods behind her house, fading away whenever she tries to approach him.

New Background design

Do you like the Fall background?  I wanted to do something for Halloween, but there wasn't a background with pumpkins, bats, spiders, witches or ghosts!  Unbelievable!!  So I settled for leaves.  What do you think?  I'll change it back to bookshelves after the holiday. ~laila

Halloween Books

Hi everyone!  Have you read any good Halloween books lately?  I'm looking for a creepy crawly read for the upcoming holiday.  Let me know if you've read or heard of a spook-tacular Halloween book!!  Mwha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!  :) ~ laila

Author: Robin McKinley

I have read so many of her books!  I love them all, and they are the type of books I never want to put down.  I've read The Hero and the Crown  at least 4 times.  That's the first one of R. McKinley's books that I read, because I got it free from a summer reading program.  I liked it immediately, and reread it several times over those next few weeks.  Then recently while I was searching for classical books online at the library, one of the books was hers.  I reserved it, then scrolled through some more of her books and got them too.  The books I got included: Beauty, The Door in the Hedge, The Blue Sword, and Chalice.   I loved them all, but my two favorite books out of all Robin's that I've read are the Blue Sword , and Chalice .   The Blue Sword has lots of adventure and it's a great read!!   Chalice is another good book, because it's different from everything I've read.  I can't describe it exactly, but I can recommend it!!  Like I said though,

Wow, that's really long!!

Hello!!  I have noticed that I can't seem to keep from writing huge blog entries, so whenever you become particularly sick of reading my gargantuan writings, feel free to comment on the length of any particular entry, and I'll try to write a nice short one like this.   ~laila

Book = Movie

Okay, there are lots of books that have been turned into movies.  These are fun to read because you read the book, then watch the movie, and it's like the book turns into a reality.  Or if you watch the movie first, then you read the book to find out if it's as good, that's fine too.  :)  One of my favorite out of the books that have been made movies is the Harry Potter series.  I think I like the books better, except for the 7th, because I love the movie!!!  Anyway.... another book is Bridge to Terebithia, which I didn't know was a book in the beginning, because I watched the movie first.  It's a great movie, and it kinda made the book not as exciting when I read it.  Has that ever happened to you, where you watch a movie and love it, then read the book and not like it?  There is not a lot of books that I don't like, ask my siblings, ask my mom, ask my dad, they'll all tell you that practically all I do is read.  Okay, back on subject.  One of my new all ti

Longest Series I Have Read

I have read 2 really long series, (in number of books and in number of pages in the books). Series #1 is called The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, and it's more of an adult series.  I liked the books though, so it's really (definitely) up to parents.  This series is 13 books long, with another book coming out ..... sometime.  :)  I hope soon, because I hate to leave a series hanging, but all I can do is wait.  The first book is called The Eye of the World, but there is a prequel to the series titled New Spring, if you want to read that first.  The books are all really long, some are over 1000 pages.  It will take a long time to read, take it from me.  I finish most books in record time.  :) Series #2 is titled Canterwood Crest.  Also with 13 books and a friend told me there is more coming out, so I'll have to wait for those too.  So much waiting!!  :)  I've only read 12 of the books so far and I am waiting for the 13th to come in at the library.  This series i

Pies and Prejudice by Heather Vogel Frederick

A major event is has occurred in the fourth book of the Mother Daughter book club series.  Emma is moving to England!!!  Thankfully, the other members of the book club come up with a way to keep the book club going.  Now Emma and her mother do a video chat once a month with their friends.  This year, since Emma and her mother (and brother and father) are in England, the book club is reading Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Mrs. Hawthorne's favorite author.  And while the Hawthorne's are in England for the year, an English family has moved into Emma's house.  The new family has 2 boys, one the girls' age (Simon) and one slightly older (Tristan).  Cassidy and her mother are the first to meet the new family, and Cassidy starts off immediately disliking Tristan, and she's not exactly his favorite person either.  And if that isn't bad enough, as a favor to one of the book club friends, Cassidy is Tristan's figure skating partner!!  Cassidy isn't sure she c

Dear Pen Pal by Heather Vogel Frederick

The third book in the Mother Daughter book club is about writing as well as reading.  The girls have pen pals from a mother daughter book in Wyoming, and they're all reading Daddy Long Legs by Jean Webster.  Not all the girls like having a pen pal.  Everyone writes though.  Jess writes to her pen pal about her new school, Colonial Academy, and about her mean dorm partner, Savannah Sinclair.  Cassidy writes about her stepfather and her soon to be baby brother or sister.  Cassidy also gets into an argument with her mother, so they go to the family shrink as Cassidy calls him.  He makes Cassidy write letters to the baby, on top of letters to her pen pal.  No more writing please!!  Emma on the other hand loves writing and is getting along perfectly with her pen pal.  Megan's pen pal loves to sew, and Megan is excited.  Until she finds out that her pen pal sews quilts .  Becca has a pen pal who just like her, snotty, mean and thinking she's better than everybody.  Only after las

Hi again!

Hi, sorry it's been so long since I put up another post!!  With school starting and trying to get the most out of the last days of summer I've been busy!!  :)  Okay, so where did I leave off?  Oh yeah. Onto the next book of the Mother Daughter Book Club Series .....

Reading

I don't understand how it is possible for someone to dislike reading!  Well, I guess I kind of understand, but still!  Reading is my way of getting away from home... while I'm still at home.  I've loved to read all my life, but some of my siblings think I'm weird ( naturally ) for loving to read.  Of course everyone has their own opinions, and my opinion just differs from theirs.  Oh, and I wish that more people had the time to read.  My dad loves to read, but he usually doesn't have the time, and my mom always wants to read, she just doesn't have the time either.  I feel bad for people like that, because I'm so used to being able to read whenever, wherever.  Well not whenever  and... not exactly wherever either, I guess.  But I do get to read a lot !!  In my opinion, it is sad when people can't read for whatever reason or when people don't like to read.  Although I don't expect everyone to be able to read as often as me, I wish more people got

Much Ado About Anne by Heather Vogel Frederick

In the second book of the mother daughter book club series, the girls are reading Anne of Green Gables and they have a new member in their book club, the snobby Becca Chadwick, one of the Fab Three in seventh grade.  Becca was one of Megan Wong's friends before Megan became friends with the other girls in the book club.  Becca is still mean to Emma, Cassidy and Jess, and Megan feels torn between her friends.  When Jess' parents are in danger of losing Half Moon Farm, Mrs. Wong embarrasses Megan by handcuffing herself to a tree at Half Moon Farm as a protest.  When a picture of her mom somehow finds a way into the school newspaper with Emma as the one who wrote it, and Cassidy as the one who took the picture, Megan sides with Becca against her friends.  But Emma and Cassidy claim they didn't write the article, and they think Becca accused them to make them look bad so Megan would ditch them and go back to hanging out with Becca and the Fab Three.  Her plan worked, and the Fa

Mother Daughter Book Club Series

I just finished reading these books for the second time, and they are great!!!  The books are written by Heather Vogel Frederick and there is four in the series so far.  I'm not sure if another one is coming out or not but I definitely hope one is!!!  The first book in this fantastic series is titled The Mother Daughter Book Club.  It's about four girls who are very different.  First is Emma Hawthorne, who loves reading and writing (just like me!!!).  Emma's mother, Mrs. Hawthorne arranges a book club between the girls and their mother's after yoga class.  As Emma would say, anything that happens after the mother's yoga class is Uh-Oh.  Sadly, one mother isn't present for the book club.  Mrs. Delaney moved away in the past to become an actress.  Jessica Delaney, along with her meddlesome twin brothers, help run the farm that Mr. and Mrs. Delaney own.  Although Mr. Delaney is an honorary member of the book club, he needs to watch after the twins and get work done

Packing Books

Hello!  Do you ever go somewhere and want to bring a ton of books?  I was packing some of my books earlier and I found out that my pile of books I've read is growing bigger and my pile of books to pack is growing smaller!!  It's really funny, because today I can't seem to stop reading, so I'll probably have read all the books I've packed by the time I leave!!  Anyway, some of the books I've read have been: Ever by Gail Carson Levine, Are You There God? It's Me Margaret by Judy Blume, The Crossroads by Chris Grabenstien, Heart to Heart by Lurlene McDaniel, The Penderwicks on Gardam Street by Jeanne Birdsall (Highly Recommended, Second book in the series), Secret of the Sirens by Julia Golding (Also Highly Recommended), and Water Street by Patricia Reilly Giff (Highly Recommended).  These are all great books, and I've marked my favorites, so you can look them up and see if you'd be interested.  See ya!

Book Club

Hi All!  I'm in a mother-daughter book club with a few of my neighbors, and we've been reading some interesting books.  The first one we read was A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck.  This is an awesome book!  The characters are so real and the story is very sweet!  I love the setting of the book, a small town where everybody knows everybody.  I don't want to give away the story, but I do recommend you read the book!  Everything on a Waffle by Polly Horvath is another amazing story.  The main character, Primrose, never loses faith that her parents are out on a little island, waiting to be rescued.  Everyone else in the town of Coal Harbour believes Primrose's parents are dead.  Primrose goes to an exotic adult, Miss Bowzer, whenever she needs help.  Miss Bowzer owns a restaurant called The Girl On The Red Swing, and it serves... well it serves "a little extra."  The next book we're reading, is called Riding Freedom by Pam Munoz Ryan.  I went ahead and read

The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall

Image
The Penderwicks is a great book!  It's officially on my (revised) favorite list! Image found on Google When the Penderwicks rent out Arundel Cottage instead of their usual summer house, they have no idea of the adventure their in for.  The trip to Arundel starts off by getting lost on the road because the dog ate the map.  And when they get directions from Harry the Tomato Guy, their first impression of the place is , "Are we lost again?  Because this is a mansion, not a cottage."  After speaking with the gardener and cleaning up the dog's barf, the five Penderwicks pull around the back of the mansion to the real cottage.  Rosalind at age 12 is the oldest Penderwick child and has curly brown hair and brown eyes, like her sisters Jane and Batty.  Blue eyes, blue Skye, is how you remember the second eldest Penderwick, Skye, who unlike her sisters is always getting into trouble.  Skye also has blue eyes and blond hair that differs from the other Penderwicks, except

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

Image
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine is a twist on the original Cinderella story.  Ella is cursed with obedience.  If someone told her to eat, she'd have to keep eating until someone ordered her to stop.  (This actually happens in the book.)  But Ella doesn't need to obey a request such as, "Ella, will you fetch me some candy?"  Ella journeys all over the country of Kyrria, trying to find a fairy to remove her curse.  Along the way Ella encounters other magical creatures such as gnomes, ogres, and elves.  Poor Ella, going through finishing school, attending a giant's wedding, eating elvish love mushrooms, and of course obeying, obeying, obeying.  There are some things for Ella to enjoy though, including her own centaur, sliding down stair rails, meeting Prince Char, looking for a hidden passage in an old castle, a friend from Ayorthia, learning new languages, and tricking ogres who want to eat her.  Ella's life is more than a little exciting!  A nice fairy ta
