My 2015 Reading/Blogging Plan

Image
I don't do well, at all, blogging with a schedule.  If I say I'll post something "next week" chances are it doesn't show up for a month or two.  I'm so skilled in procrastination that it's hard to do anything at all with a deadline.  :) Usually for the new year, I promise to post more often.  That hasn't worked in past years, so all I'm going to say is that I'm going to try and read more often; maybe write up a quick summary and my opinion, at least one paragraph, per book.  I'll find more authors to put on my  author's page  and I'll keep track of the books on the  book page .  I also have a nifty checklist that I'm going to try and check off throughout the year. On top of the checklist, I'll be adding a new page to the blog: My 2015 Reading List.  As of January 1st, every book I read will go onto the list.  The ones I feel like blogging about will have a link to the post about that book, the ones I don't feel

Blood of Olympus Part 2 - The Reading

Image
This isn't going to be like my usual posts, where I sort of summarize the book, because that means MAJOR spoilers.  So here's my overall impression. While reading the book, I was totally captivated.  I read for two and a half hours straight, until the book was finished.  Let me tell you.... oh my gosh!! Percy is sassy.  Annabeth is awesome.  Sadly, they didn't have chapters in this story.  However, it was nice to see them getting a break.  They're sixteen, just came back from Tartarus, and still have to save the world.  While I was sad not to see their perspectives, I understand, and think it works better for the story. Jason is a hero.  Piper is too.  I like to think of "Jasper" as the golden children.  They seem so... the word I'm looking for isn't perfect because they have their problems, but it's close to perfect, and it's unbelievable.  I guess I just relate to them less than I do Percy and Annabeth, and so I didn't like them muc

Blood of Olympus Part 1 - The Waiting

Image
I don't know if you are aware, but Blood of Olympus, the fifth book in the Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan, is in bookstores as of tomorrow!  I am so excited, but so nervous, but so excited! To fill the remaining 7 hours before October 7th, and then the extra 13 hours after that until I can actually get the book, I'm going to share with you all my worries about the plot, my thoughts on the book cover, what I wish for the characters, and my anxiety about waiting! Ever since The Lost Hero was released, I've always been anxious about the next book in the series.  Blood of Olympus is no exception.  If anything, I'm more anxious because it's the last book in the series and things were not looking bright when we left The 7 in House of Hades.  I've heard rumors that one of the 7 will die, I've heard rumors that two of the 7 will die.  I've heard rumors that everyone dies.  It's nerve-wrecking. Let's address the most obvious worry he

The Maze Runner by James Dashner

In honor of the Maze Runner movie, which comes out in the United States on September 19th, I've decided to review the book and sum it up for those of you who plan on seeing the movie first.  This is most definitely a book I have read before, three times actually, so I like to think I know what I'm talking about. One of the great things about this book is that it's all narrated from the main character Thomas's point of view.  This is also an annoying aspect of the book because when we first meet Thomas, he's 99.9% clueless about what is going on.  So we learn things and meet people as Thomas does. From what I've heard (thanks to interviews with the cast and such being on YouTube), we can expect the same viewpoint in the movie, learning things as Thomas learns them.  If you haven't read the book, prepare for total confusion-slash-curiousity. The book starts off with a boy (Thomas) who is trapped in a metal box.  He doesn't know how he got there, he do

The City's Son by Tom Pollock

Image found on Google Beth Bradley is running away.  Beth is running from her distant father and traitorous best friend; she is also running towards something else, a change at a better life.  More specifically, Filius, the crown prince of London's underworld.  The underworld where glassy spiders can steal voices and nursemaids form from piles of garbage.  Electricity dances and railwraiths terrorize the trains in the underworld. Beth and Filius travel across the prince's realm, gathering an army to battle Filius' mother's greatest foe.  Reach, the god of demolition, is after Filius.  When Beth's best friend is taken, and her (Beth's) father joins the ranks of Filius' army while searching for his daughter, Beth must choose between her new life in the underworld, or the old life she left behind.

Series: Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott

The Alchemyst, the Magician, the Sorceress, the Necromancer, the Warlock, and the Enchantress.  Six great books filled with magic, the twins of legend, and the importance of family.  Over time, characters are added and taken away, but the main focus of the series is Sophie and Josh Newman. The Alchemyst: Sophie and Josh Newman are twins.  Their parents are archeologists, they are staying in San Francisco with their aunt, and they work with the Flemings.  Sophie works in a shop called The Coffee Cup, and the boss' close friend is Peri Fleming, who Sophie knows quite well.  Across the street, Josh works in Nick Fleming's bookstore.  One day, Sophie notices this strange man, dressed in a large coat in the summertime, enter Nick's bookstore, where Josh is working.  Not long after, the store explodes.  Sophie and Peri run to help, and that's how Josh and his sister end up on a crazy adventure.  The Flemings, who are actually the Flamels, are being chased by an evil magici

A Quick Review

Hi!  I went to the library recently, and after blogging about a few of my favorite books I got, I decided to do a quick review of the leftovers!  They are still great books of course, just a little different from what I usually read. Life After Theft by Aprilynne Pike Kimberlee Schaffer died last year.  According to the gossip around Jeff's new school, Kimberlee was a total mean girl.  Something no one except Jeff knows though, is that Kimberlee was also a kleptomaniac.  How could he know this if he was new to the school?  Kimberlee told him.  That's right.  Kimberlee Schaffer is a ghost, and she thinks it is because of all her unfinished business, a.k.a. the hundreds of boxes full of stuff she stole.  Because Jeff is the only one who can see her, she enlists his help to getting her to the afterlife.  Which means Jeff needs to return everything she stole.  Unfortunately for Jeff, it's harder for him to bring things back than it was for Kimberlee to steal the  in the fir

Author: Maggie Stiefvater

Maggie Stiefvater has written many amazing books, filled with adventure, magic, and awe.  Her works, most of which I've read, include The Shiver Trilogy, the Raven Cycle (a series of four books featuring Blue Sargent and the Raven Boys), The Books of Faerie (which so far consist of Lament and Ballad and will feature Requiem soon), and book two of the Spirit Animals series, which is written by various authors. While the magic in the stories draw you in, the characters really capture your attention.  None of these books are your typical, cliche novels.  Maggie Stiefvater opens the door to the unexpected and welcomes you in. I reviewed three of Maggie Stiefvater's books The Raven Boys The Dream Thieves and Shiver For a full description of all Maggie Stiefvater's books, click  here .  Maggie also interacts with her fans often on her  blog .

The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

I have recently discovered that I have not blogged about The Lost Hero yet.  That's crazy!  So, here I am, blogging about it.  Sorry it took so long. As you may have gathered from previous Heroes of Olympus posts, the main characters in this story are Jason, Leo, and Piper. Jason doesn't know where he is, what he is, or why all this is happening.  He keeps having weird thoughts and can fluently speak in Latin.  After arriving at Camp Half-Blood, Jason slowly starts to remember who he is, and it's not all good.  Because where he comes from could be a danger to his new friends. Piper McLean has an amnesiac boyfriend...who might not be her boyfriend, she was just tossed off the edge of the Grand Canyon, and her dad could be in trouble.  A giant keeps coming to her in her dreams and telling her she can save her dad, if she betrays her friends.  Piper has a very important choice to make, and she's running out of time. Leo Valdez is funny and sarcastic, and did I men

2014

Happy New Year everyone!  It is officially 2014, and I need to begin updating my blog once again.  One of my New Year's resolutions is to blog at least once a week, and to read more often, because in this past year I've been lagging.  It's been about three years since I started this blog, and I want to thank you all for reading and commenting.  I hope your coming year is better than the last, you deserve it. ~Kayla
