Eggs by Jerry Spinelli

'He spoke to the beautiful face.
"Are you sleeping?"  The eyes did not open.  He could not decide if he wanted them to open.  The humped eyelids with their glittery purple were like tiny twin eggs, bird's eggs.  "Are you going to say something?"  The mouth did not move.  "You're dead, aren't you?"  The beautiful face was as still as the trees.  He was not afraid.'  - Inside front cover of Eggs by Jerry Spinelli

Eggs is the story of 9 year old David and 13 year old Primrose.  After a very strange first meeting in the woods at an Easter egg hunt, David and Primrose gravitated towards each other.  Primrose constantly teases David, and they say they hate each other, but they tell each other secrets and go on adventures together.  David's mother died, and his father is at work all the time.  He never breaks any rules, except his grandma's.  He lives with his grandma, but her rules don't count.  She's trying to be his mom.  David's mom is gone because someone broke a rule, but if David follows all the rules, his mother will eventually come back.  Primrose is looking for her father.  Any time they see a man on the TV at Refrigerator John's house, David thinks maybe its her father, until Primrose yells at him.  They go on lots of adventures, like looking for worms to earn money for paint, and going up to the big city, Philadelphia, to see the waving man.  Primrose wants to ask him why he waves.

I can't say much more without spoiling it completely, but it's a really touching story in my opinion.  No matter what their age differences, Primrose and David have a lot in common, and they look out for each other (sometimes).  :)
