While You Were Texting by Delancey Stewart and Marika Ray

Thank you to Social Butterfly PR and the authors for including me in the blog tour for this book!

Below is my honest review, which can also be found on Goodreads.

Lincoln Cunningham’s mother has set him up on 15 blind dates. She just doesn’t seem to get the message that he has no interest in a relationship, and so he regularly sits at Paint It, Pal, painting frogs and suffering.  New in town and living in a fixer-upper of a house (with vineyard attached) left to her by her aunt, Hannah Delacourt knows nothing about grapes and has no intention of staying in Solano Creek for any longer than it will take her to get the vineyard in order.  As an employee at Paint It, Pal, Hannah is witness to all of Lincoln’s date disasters, and when he slips her an SOS asking for a text to get out of his latest date, she obliges. Via text, the two come to an agreement - Hannah will act as fake-girlfriend to keep Mom Cunningham satisfied and Lincoln will survey the grapes and help her with the land.  But will their false start get in the way as these two decide they may want more?

First of all, Lincoln and Hannah are super cute and have great chemistry.  Lincoln is absolutely adorable, and his struggle in social situations is entirely relatable. I really like that Hannah is completely open and honest with him in response to his own directness (although that doesn’t prevent a misunderstanding or two). Their connection both in person and over text is authentic and sweet. A little detail I really appreciated was the contact names!  They change throughout the story and give insight into what the characters aren’t saying out loud.

I will say that it felt like the story was going by really fast. The whole theme of this series is technology and texting, and I think it is incorporated into Lincoln and Hannah’s relationship really naturally. However, with a lot depending on the texting, I feel like I didn’t get to know the characters as well or like it was a superficial understanding of their personality.  I love getting to know characters in books and I felt like the hook was missing for me to do that with this pair.

I did read the first book in this series before reading this one in order to have some background for this review and I think they’re just getting better as the series goes on.  This story felt more real and the connection between the characters seemed more natural, and I love seeing the progression of these authors and their writing. Plus, the tropes they choose are spot on. Boston and El from Texting with the Enemy are classic enemies-to-lovers, while Lincoln and Hannah have the fake-dating trope. Can’t wait for the third book to see what comes up next!

While You Were Texting, an all-new laugh out loud rom com from USA Today bestselling authors Delancey Stewart and Marika Ray, is available now!

Lincoln Cunningham doesn’t do relationships. Mostly because he learned in college that he doesn’t do them well. Translation: book smart guys focused on learning the art and science of vineyard tending aren’t always girl smart, and the humiliation that comes from being the only one invested in the relationship, well, that’s enough for him.

Lincoln’s mother, however, isn’t so sure. Her oldest son found his match, and now her sights are set on Linc. Why she insists on setting him up at the Paint it Pal pottery shop is beyond anyone’s grasp.

Hannah Delacourt never dreamed of a life spent handing customers ceramic monkeys and pots of paint and explaining the inner workings of a kiln. But she also never intended to spend a year trying to figure out whether the vineyard she inherited should be sold or might actually produce wine.

When the same cute guy comes in to paint on date after miserable date, she figures out what’s going on pretty quickly. He slips her an SOS and she texts him to help him out of the latest painful date. When he texts later to thank her, they hatch the perfect scheme.

She’ll pretend to be his girlfriend while he helps her figure out if her grapes are worth keeping. Everyone wins, right? But what happens when you fall in love when you’re texting with your fake boyfriend? Worse yet, what do you do when he’s clueless?

From two USA Today bestselling authors, a RomCom so sweet you'll want to hug your kindle and never look at texting the same way.
